Canada Day signals the start of summer, the alpine hiking season and concerts at Celebration Plaza. Here's a guide on what's happening and my favourite events.

We start off with a double hit of Farmer's market. It runs both Saturday and Sunday for the long weekend. There's fresh produce, yummy baking, fresh gelato and a variety of talented artisans. Located over at the base of Blackcomb by the kid's adventure center. Running 11 am to 4 pm both Saturday or Sunday. Make a picnic from the offerings at the market and head over to Rebagliati Park by Fitzsimmons Creek to eat with the sounds of the creek.

Head up the mountain and enjoy alpine wildflowers, look for some whistling marmots and take a walk. Whistler Mountain was named after these chubby characters. Head up to the peak and try the new suspension bridge. One of the best values in town is the WB summer sightseeing pass. Under $100 and good until Thanksgiving.

The best thing about Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights is the mountaintop buffet. Work up an appetite and dine with a view. Be sure to buy tickets in advance as this dinner regularly sells out. On both Saturday and Sunday evenings ride down the mountain by 8 pm and head over to Celebration Plaza to catch the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. True music in the mountains! Stretch out on a blanket and close your eyes.

Start Canada Day with pancakes at Celebration Plaza from 9 am. This is a fundraiser for Bearsmart. At noon the Whistler Canada Day parade winds through the Village. See the street entertainment, the RCMP in red serge or enter the Pique Pedal Parade.

Grab your bikes and wander the valley trail. See how many beaches you can swim at out of our five lakes. Extra points for Green Lake which is glacial fed. Grab a bite at the food trucks at Lost Lake, Lakeside and Rainbow parks.

Street entertainment wanders through the Village all weekend or head back up the mountain for another walk. The alpine is a great spot to spend time in the summer heat.

Transit is free all weekend or ride your bike in. There's free bike valet service all weekend. Enjoy all Whistler has to offer and remember ski season is around the corner!

P.S. Fireworks set off from the mountaintop at 10 pm on July 1st.
